Payments and Refunds of Airline Tickets

Find flights, cruises, car rental, vacation packages, hotels and getaways.

When you make your reservation and purchase your airline tickets, there is a variety of ways in which you can pay. There is also a range of ways is which refunds can be made, many of which are dependent upon the method you used to originally pay for your tickets.

The first thing to remember is that if you are paying by check and are going to buy your tickets in person, it is always best to take two forms of ID with your name, address and, if possible, your photo on them. This will help the travel agent or airline to confirm your identity. Other ways of paying for your flights is by cash, and also by credit or debit card.

If you have paid by check for your airline ticket and you need a refund, you should note that your refunded money is likely to be sent to you by post, in the form of a company check. If you paid by credit card or debit card, any refund on your airline tickets will normally be credited to your account within a specified time period, usually seven days. If you paid for your airline tickets with cash, you would mot likely be entitled to a cash refund.

If you have to change your flight, the airline may have to refund the cost of the old ticket and then re-issue new one. You will then be charged in full for the new ticket. So, if you paid for your original ticket by credit card and then needed to change your flight, you may find that the airline refunds the cost of your old ticket and then charges you for the cost of a new one. Remember that the refund could take up to seven days to reach your account but the new payment will be taken immediately, so ensure that you have enough available credit to cover this transaction. Not all airlines will operate this way, and you should check at the time of purchasing the original ticket.

You must also remember that not all airline tickets are refundable. Some airlines will offer a percentage of money back on the cost of a cancelled ticket; others will offer no recompense at all. You should always check with the airline or travel agent before you purchase your ticket, and this way it will not come as a shock if you end up having to cancel or change your flights.

Replacing or getting a refund on tickets that are lost can be very difficult, and you must therefore ensure that you always keep your airline ticket in a safe place. If you do lose it, you could end up having to pay for another ticket. If you paid for your ticket by credit card, the task of getting a replacement may be a little easier as your ticket number should be recorded against the sale on your credit card.

Another benefit to paying for your ticket by credit card is that you can enjoy additional cover with this method of payment. For example, if you claim a refund against a cancelled ticket and the airline does not make the refund within the specified period, you can write in to your credit card company and it might be possible for them to issue to refund to your account.
